Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez is the first woman to win the Soca Monarch crown and thousands of masqueraders yesterday made her their queen of the road, prancing to her hit “Meet Superblue” and setting the stage for her to win her third Road March.
The results are to be announced today, but if the frequency with which Lyons-Alvarez’s song received airplay yesterday, never failing to whip masqueraders into a frenzy at most judging points in Port-of-Spain and San Fernando, is anything to go by, the crown appears to be hers.
Is there any better photo opportunity in the world than Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago? I doubt it! Beautiful people, spectacular costumes, beaming smiles, great atmosphere, sunshine… you name it. No wonder there are thousands of photographers lining the streets of Port of Spain and thankfully many of them share their pictures with all of us in the internet. Here are just two out of many links to nice photo sets on Flickr: Kiddies Carnival 2009 (by “dexout”) Old Time Mas (by “Look Out Barbados”)
Have a look and enjoy!
Chalkie did it again and took the Calypso Monarch crown on Dimanche Gras this Sunday with the song “My Heart and I”. He equalled the record of The Mighty Sparrow, who also has eight titles. Chalkdust said to the Trinidad Express:
Now that I have equalled Sparrow’s record, I am thinking of bowing out of the competition, out of respect for Sparrow. I have no desire to break his record because of what he means to calypso and all he has achieved through the years.
