A new book about soca and calypso history just came out: The Finalists - A Graphical Look Back at Trinidad & Tobago’s Calypso and Soca Monarch Finals, edited by John E H Barry.
The result of years of research, this book graphically traces the history of both the Calypso and Soca Monarch finals. For the first time in our history of staging these competitions, researchers, students and lovers of these art forms can find in one place a complete listing of the finalists, their songs, the places they secured in the finals, and in the case of the calypso finalists, the tents to which each calypsonian was affiliated through the years. To this date the preoccupation has been with the winner, casting away the others who have also made worthy contributions; “The Finalists” corrects that.
New York based Catalyst Entertainment presents „Soca Rizin Volume 1″,
the first Soca album entirely produced by a woman, namely Michelle “Miche” Williams, the only female producer in the Soca industry.
“Soca Rizin” covers a spectrum from traditional Soca to flavors with broad international appeal. Some of the tracks mix Soca with R&B, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Reggae and Reggaeton. The album includes 18 tracks with several radio releases such as “Always On My Mind” by Mista Vybe ft. Michelle Sylvester, “Look Excuse” by Gailann, “Jah In Your Life” by Benjai, “Wine with You” by Trinity and the title track, “Soca Rize” by Maximus Dan.

Although carnival in Montserrat is no summer carnival but is celebrated between Christmas and New Year there are Soca-related news from the island’s 2005/06 Soca Monarch Scrappy.
The promissing son of the island, who also became Junior Calypso Monarch twice before he left Montserrat, currently resides in London where he is just about to release his third album „Soca Is Life”. And this only days after his second solo album „Dreams Are Reality” became available at all major download stores like iTunes, Napster, Juno and many more, after signing contracts with Europe’s biggest Soca label Faluma Digital.
The young artist who just turned age 25 last week, is not only singing but is also writing and producing most of his tunes and runs his own production label called Danger 1 Productions. By being such an all-rounder Garvin „Scrappy” Johnson qualified to be one of the fresh and upcoming artists distributed digitally by Faluma, beside many big names like Krosfyah, Mastamind, El-A-Kru and Madd.
