Europe has a new soca record label: Katana House Records (KHR). They just released the Hard Hitter Riddim, a combination of different genres and styles of music: soca, dancehall and UK grime. Produced by “JA Katana” and co-produced by Kenny Phillips. The riddim features a duett by Macka Diamond and Denise Belfon which has a lot potential to be the next big hit. ther artists are Flava, Trini Jacobs, grime artists Wiley and D Double E, reggaeton artist Adriel, plus Jamaican singers like Hollow Point, Leftside and Esco a.k.a Dr. Evil. Last sunday Port of Spain saw a crowd with over 12,000 persons to participate in the Death March organised by the Keith Noel 136 Committee. The Anti-Crime-March – 307 people have been murdered so far this year – was accompanied by Soca and Calypso artists like Maximus Dan, Shurwayne Winchester, Singing Sandra, Brother Resistance and many more.
‘Comings and Goings’ Calypso: A Moment and Movement Concerning Memory, Migration and Displacement seminar will be held on 3 – 5 November 2005, in the Centenary Gallery at the University of Leeds.
This is a transdisciplinary seminar which seeks to interrogate the musical practices of West Indian Carnival by exploration of its roots/routes through, and contribution to, the evolution of contemporary music practices in Britain today, and by extension, its wider impact on British culture.
In particular the seminar will examine the genres of calypso, mento, spooge, steelband, reggae and sound systems and the more recent developments of soca, rapso, chutney, zouk and dance hall, as well as look at the impact of these genres have had within the context of contemporary popular music industry e.g., in the USA and UK. The starting point of these explorations is grounded in an initiative of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida who have developed a web exhibition, www.calypsoworld.org (co-curated by Stephen Stuempfle and Ray Funk), and conference project on the international dissemination of calypso music from Trinidad from the mid-twentieth century.

Last tuesday one of the VI’s most important entertainer, Nicholas “Daddy” Friday passed away. He was the bandleader, singer and composer of the Jam Band. His musical career started with the band Eddie and the Movements in the 80s. Jam Band was the most successfull of the Virgin Islands – they won over 16 roadmarches. Our condolences go out to his family and the JamBand members.

Trinidads famous Soca Artist KMC is set to release his Album ‘Soul On Fire’ on his new Label Sequence Records in the USA. The album, which is named after the artiste’s popular single Soul On Fire (came out in June at Sequence), will be released on October 4 at the Hyatt Hotel, Miami. After doing eight albums from 1997 (Soca Bashment) till 2005 (Circle Of Love) on his own, this will be the first release from a four-album deal with his new label. The second single, Love, which is a new song from KMC, will be released in Trinidad this week and in New York by the end of November.
