I first heard Onyan’s “If you get what you want tonight will you remember me tomorrow”, in the early 90’s in Bonaire. It stopped me in my tracks, and I found out it was a band called Burning Spear or Flames or something like that.
On the strength of that one song, I bought “Dig”. Dig lead to Klatey, and an addiction as strong as crack.
Fact is you could argue for years as to who is better (who could compose a better hook than the keyboard in one bad apple, or swing engine, among many others)
But if you stop and think about it, what are the odds of getting four people together as brilliant as the Flames? The only parallel that springs to mind is the Beatles, and they also lost a lot when they struck out on their own.
Antiguans I found tend to take the talent of the brothers for granted, judging how blase they seem to be when the brothers play locally in their respective bands.
I sail around the eastern caribbean on my boat, and when I tell locals from other islands that I’ve seen the Flames play on the street, they tend not to believe me, seeing as how they are only exposed to them in large venues.
If you are Antiguan,consider yourself lucky that such genius could spring from one family, that you were of a generation that experienced it, and realize that it will probably not be in our lifetimes that something quite like the original Flames comes around again.

You guys are crazy. I am from Stlucia. Flames got a lot of ideas for their music in my country. Like Karate. They big st.lucia’s carnival. St.Lucia’s is Onyan’s 2nd home. Nut I give Oungku the edge. His alums hae more market appeal.
