Former Burning Flames member Clarence Edwards aka Oungku, who left the band a few weeks ago, has formed a new band called Red Hott Flames. The band will first appear for Miami carnival in october.

‘Red Hott Flames’ was just a name change and one member less. And the ONLY BAD MINDED person is OUNGKU. Nothing has changed, the music is still the same (just without bass), hint hint …. Oungku needs to stop and remember who helped him to get his first break.. And with all the BS he’s done over the years we as fans still sucked by ‘them’ the entire band..Oungku has forgotten that he is from Antigua and not Trinidad.. I’M A ‘BURNING FLAMES’ FAN NOT A OUNGKU FAN !!!!!
OUNGKU just lookin’ a rebirth…since Magician his music has steadily declined…he is running out of ideas and creativity…just check his…so-called chants over the years…no music…no melody…that is definitely not the flames of the 80’s and 90’s …when the music had depth and substance…

Young Oungku…wha you mean when you say that is Oungku who play bass on all the “Flames” albums? Clarify please. If that is true..it shows that Oungku had no respect for Krokuss as a bassist…I have seen the band live endless times and Krokuss played the bass lines exactly like what were on the albums…that is telling me that Krokuss is comparably as good as Oungku…and we’ll see this year carnival… my bet is on BURNING FLAMES to produce the better CD…better music and sweeter melodies
First things first, it’s “Red Hot Flames” with one “t” not two. Secondly, “Burning Flames” WAS Oungku… no “Oungku” no “Burning Flames”. Oungku will never run out of ideas or creativity… just listen to his latest album “Da Real Deal”, new ideas new FIRE!! Next, Oungku creates and records all of his music without any help from band members. The band members are needed at recording time for vocals ONLY. If Oungku made a “business decision” to get rid of Krokuss, respect the man for his decision. One more thing, the comment about Oungku forgetting he is from Antigua, that was just showing this “Oungku hater’s” desperation to say SOMETHING anti-Oungku. His tunes are “home grown in Antigua” and sound nothing like Trini soca. Onika was and Ester is an amazing singer, get off your “high horse” and enjoy the music. I’m certain you will be the first to start wining up to “Red Hot Flames” not even realizing it’s “Da Real Deal”!!!! Life is about CHANGE, if you can’t change with Oungku, then you were never a “true fan”.
Now Genifah it seems as if you are endorsing OUNGKU doing ev’ryt’ing on the recordings…So tell me..which band you would like to play in but not allowed to go in the studio to do your thing on your ax???? My dear “jredlox”, you can not compare my job or a sports team to the music industry. And yes, I am endorsing Oungku… he has been doing this for many years and it’s just now everyone wants to talk about it? “One man”!
I’m a musical arranger. It means you play every instrument on an computer based system using keyboards. I can mimic all of Krokuss’ bass on the keyboard using the right program. Secondly, Oungku chooses the notes that everyone plays, so he know what he’s going for. I have been a Flames fan for years, owning every album from both Flames and Onyan. Honestly, Oungku has proven more adversity than Onyan in their competing albums. Onyan seems to be more immature as well, bashing Oungku at every turn. As for as the new band, it’s just Oungku expanding his creativity. He suffered losses with band members and the death of Onika, but he’s still on top. What does that show you about an Edwards brother from Antigua?

Guys, in a few days is gonna make a year since you’ve been trying to figure out who’s best… I hope on the day of the anniversary we can all come to a conclusion that “Flames” is simply the best.

Guys, you got to be fair. Red Hot is gonna miss Krokus’ crazy antics and Onyans high pitched voice…and as a true fan, Lion’s Den nor Jam Pond was about one man… it was about seeing what supidness “the guys” were gonna have people do, get a chance to hear “the guys” chanting their new slangs and hear the whole of Antigua following them.
Of course, all Oungku have is raw talent and no one can take that away from him. If any of you were true fans, you would know that based on all “Flames” live sessions, it’s strictly “riddim and chanting” and despite whether Oungku can sing or not, when the dude produces the riddim, all he have to do is just chant the punch lines. To be honest, I can hardly understand sometimes what he’s saying, but year after year, the guy have proven that he’s a musical giant.
For some reason, i just don’t know why we keep adding fuel to fire. It used to be the more other bands criticize them, the harder they would come the following year, but the day you guys started to compare out of them who was best, then what else you’re gonna expect but a growing rift. And as they say, the more ya fuel the fire, the more someone is gonna get burn… and I know it isn’t me

In addition to Soca I love classical music, and some of Oungku’s earlier keyboard riffs rival Mozart in beauty and simplicity. Onyan and Ounku together had a a brilliant synergy with each brothers musical strengths complementing the others’.
Having said that, I find Onyan the better songwriter with his moving ballads and plaintative singing style.
I think however that both have become somewhat stale in the last few years with their music sounding like things that they did earlier.
This is one white boy that owns just about everything that they have ever done!

I’m a huge Flames fan for years…lose nuff girlfriends cuz they sick of hearing constant Oungku and Onyan in dey skin…LOL…but I don’t care. Having worked with every other top band over the years, I finally had the honour of bringing the Red Hot Flames in concert this past season. It was mash up from start to end!! Whole place ah done…and they liked it very WET WET!!
It’s like this…the two things that fuel incredible bands like Burning Flames, The Beatles, U2, etc is youth and collaboration. Once you lose one of dem two things you might hear a diluted product.
It is simply impossible for Oungku to make as good music as when Onyan was there to bounce ideas back and forth. Just listen to Hurricane Approach when they are BOTH singing…Congo Man…sweet for days.
Paul McCartney’s band Wings and John Lennon singin’ solo couldn’t do anywhere near what The Beatles did either. So the sum is always greater than the parts. We know this.
Having said that however, Oungku hasn’t dropped off much atoll! The Magician album was incredible with every tune mashin up… and that was ALL Oungku! Constant hits EVERY year…some huge like Rush…some lesser, but the man keeps producing hits well into his forties.
There is no way on Earth you can compare Onyan’s music to Oungku’s individually. Oungku’s music has penetrated all the big fetes and Carnivals outside of Antigua without a hitch for years since the split whereas Onyan’s has not. Although I will say when I hear Onyan perform, he displays more of “the original Flames” sound in concert that made me the fan that I am. They both have their strengths in that sense.
For the record, Oungku played the bass as a pickney for Arrow’s Hot, Hot, Hot…probably calypso’s greatest and most recognized bass riff ever. The man was a bass player before he even got into keyboards. He can definitely do it all himself in studio if he chooses too!

for the last twenty or so years I have enjoyed the music of the flames,I can remember back in the early days when me and the boys from english harbour would stand in awe as we heard the flames play. the combination of onyan and oungku was simply the best sound we had ever heard,hearing onyan sing was the highligt of the evening (the dude have a great voice/very captivating).bubby provided the humor , while oungku kept the riddim rolling, foxx was cool as he played the drums. Throughout the years the flames continued to dominate the music seen in antigua and abroad, with there uptempo style rithym and high pitch voices, they were simply the best there ever was, and in my opinion their may never be another band as good as the flames. Now as far as the separation goes I will tell you the plain truth .in the original flames onyan carried the load when it came to singing his sweet voice was great for the rythms that oungku produced.many have asked the question are the flames of today( red hot flames) better than the original four the answer is NO, WHILE OUNGKU IS BY FAR A SUPERIOR ALL AROUND MUSICIAN THAN ONYAN WHEN YOU COMBINE THE MUSICAL GENIOUS OF OUNGKU WITH THE SINGING OF ONYAN YOU GET AN UNBEATABLE COMBINATION.

Oungku is the better musician by far. Onyan is the better singer. But music sells albums cuz you could always get away with lesser vocals, but if you don’t have the sick riddim, you hatta sit down.

P.S. Onyan made Alison Hinds’ Electricity back in the day amongst others. Big, big hit. He can bring it musically as well when he ready. Just not like Oungku.

Come now people… Let’s admit it. We’re all in pain because there was never EVER a better band than the original Flames… from creativity to over the top styles, “know-they-run-the-show” lyrics…the best, baddest band the Caribbean ever produce.

Now that they split and dirty laundry in the place, we all feelin’ it. We all mourn different. Personally I can’t stop listening to album after album in meh head…all in the car, at work…endless Flames.
But this back and forth is unnecessary.
If you truly want to break it down, BOTH bands did have a gig ON THE SAME STAGE in Toronto in summer 2003. I was there. I have to say (and I was surprised) Onyan had the better sound…the sound that first made me come to know Flames. But Oungku BY FAR has the greater talent as producer and arranger. All his pan songs are ridiculous, crazy riddims, he has big time penetration in the mainstream Trini market…not easy to do. And with his ability to create the catchiest melodies and harmonies(over repeat riddims or not) more than makes up for his drop off in live singing ability compared to Onyan.
As for the bass man…Krokuss is one of the best. PERIOD. Oungku’s big pan-based tunes are dominated by incredible bass that I only hope in the coming years can be matched by the new bass man. So let’s give the wild man his credit.
Bottom line…Oungku will never sing like Onyan. Onyan will never make music like Oungku. P-E-R-I-O-D.
As for getting them on the same stage, that would be my ultimate project as a promotah. I just might try and do that.

And as for the repeat riddims…yes a lot of Oungku’s faster tunes are based on a few repeated synth beats. But the strings and harmonies change, and if you listen Onika’s songs…Don’t Stop It, All Yours, Mash It Up, Raddam…completely unique arrangements.
And Octane Boost? Ultimate chippin’ tune.

wow, i actually read all the comments and i must say all of us have burning flames at heart. life goes on people, red hot flames or burning flames, its still the real deal. lets just enjoy the music of two great brothers.
as a promoter i have had the privilege of working with Oungku and all i can say is, this man is great and he has a heart too. the first time i brought him to st. lucia (2004) he delivered in all aspects. could you believe i actually had to remind Oungku that he had not yet received the second half the performance fees, he could not care less… wow…. thats a first…. usually artist do not take the stage unless they have been fully payed…..
the second time i hosted oungku was in august of 2006 to promote the new album ” de real deal”
the third time Oungku and red hot flames came to st. lucia in 2006 was to perform at link up 2k6 which was a collaboration between him and myself……
nothing worked out according to plan. the main sponsor was dissappointing which led to a total choas. the show went on in any case…. the only positive thing about the show was the 2 & 1/2 hour performance by red hot flames, Oungku had delivered as promised….. i stood in the crowd watching oungku and the band perform like they had been payed a million bucks to perform and it almost brought
tears to my eyes….. everyone has having a hell of a time……. particularly when oungku left the keyboard to lead the crowd to perform the quad ride…….. and of course when the band performed “de real deal” the place went up in a frenzy….. the show ended at about 5 a.m. and i can remember an english man who was at the show walking up to me and saying , “This is the best band in the world - Oungku is the best”
oungku i owe you big time… thanks a million….. i will never forget what oungku said to me….. there will always be dissappointment….. but you cant stop now…..
only a man who is pure in heart can have such principles….. i wonder if this is the reason burning flames have survived for so long…..
oungku i do not know how you do it but…… it great….. keep up the excellence…..

This year carnival red hott taking all this time, road march 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 if so many because this album has enough hits to take them all.Its the first time ive ever cried listening to soca/benna music, its miraculous the way Oungku arranges pure quality hits Consistently.He has done it with Onika now hes making Esta Dyer into a soca star with the biggest hit of all time “MASS”!Just listen, never before have we herd such a magical song for all ages, even pickeny inna belly can jam to it!
Soca Awards: I guess u have to sound like a trinidadian to get plenty nominations at this so called soca awards.They have left out oungku in many categories over the years such as best song writer, best producer and best soca album.I can bet u if he was trini or bajan or sounded like them he would have been.
Antigua is the place to be and we are very proud to have SIR OUNGKU and the Schorching Red Hot Flames.

SIR OUNGKU’s music is dunce. It’s repetitive and simple. He’s a one handed 3 finger Key presser. Music sounde great after you have downed a few.
For all the Burning Flames haters… And for those who said that Burning Flames should retire… Its time too pay the piper… Not only did ‘Onyan and the Burning Flames win Road March but they did so with ‘Papi’ being heard ‘76′ times!!!! I am not from Antigua and i love both Red Hot Flames and Burning flames. I must say this year Oungku has done justice to silent his critics with this superb album. As a musician i can say Oungku have a more marketable album as to Burning flames. The only reason why Papi got the road march is because that song is empty and have no musical creativeness in it. All the Antigua local bands choose to play it cause its very easy to play. A song with no structure and just some stupid lyrics. That Papi song will not go or play no where but Antigua. Oungku still run tings out here. Antiguans should be proud of Oungku.
Burning flames with Onyan is going to show out Red Hot Flames. I am rooting for burning flames, with or without oungku.
It’s all about the hook Wendy. plus Minor chords are out of place in a road jam. There is no sadness there. That’s why Papi won. Simple. Ounku’s songs start out with a bang, then go off into minor progressions that KILL the vibe. POOR The original combination Ounku Onyan Bubi & Foxx was and will always be the best. Each member contributing his strengths. A one man band runs out of ideas real quick. Imagine, every year the same old steel-band song, the same rock song…come on. for a set of brothers hovering around their 50s they need to wake up.

Red hot flames going places and this year album is fully equipped to take soca/benna to a magical level. That song heavy metal had my friends from england going mad! crazy!
They love to stunt,play mass and jam todamoon, its plain to see that Oungku was the backbone and still is the man.

Yes folks, this is a good thread but I must admit that being from the old school of Antiguan style Kaiso/Benna/Soca (The Swallow, Short Shirt, Obstinate days)and Trinidad’s 1970’s/80’s soca scene, I discovered this “new style” burning flames calypso band late but I also became a big fan and I also have a lot of their records (especially when I discovered that they were originally Arrow’s crew. I also have some of Onyan’s music and I am looking forward in getting a hold of Oungku’s “Red Hot Flames”: Both Oungku and Onyan are great musicians in their own right.

wendy wendy wendy … its sad to sit here and read the crap you are writing.clearly you have no formal knowledge of music and the burning flames. oungku does allow the members to play on the album but from years of knowing him and his brothers…they don’t show up to do the work.which on many occasions leav clarence edward to play the bass and other instruments on the album..if you look back at all of the albums he still put krokuss name ass players on the songs when he know it is he that do the work..now if he was so bad minded and wicked why would he do that.. the name burning flames legally belongs to oungku you know that wendy!!!! if he was so bad minded he could have left his brothers with out a paddle to row there boat with… alot of time people see the brothers and don’t know th full story ..i really would like people to give jack his jacket oungku is by far a better aranger producer and writer than all of the brothers and his music has gone way further than any one of them on there own….i personally find onyan a better voice but onyan was doing much better as onyan and baygon band… playing 7 gigs a week in the same country shows that u are not making it as a touring band missy ….it would be nice to see them all back together but like all families they have there diffrences…onyan for one can’t speak his mind with out acting crazy and mashing up his guitar or walking off stage or cursing up the crowd…krokuss is never around to do his work but always around to ask for money…and oungku is a stubon man at times
