Piracy piracy everywhere..

A bajan newspaper is pushing a campaign against the popular website islandmix. com. The mentioned site has a room where you can preview new and old tunes in a very low quality. Thou most artists understand this as a free promotion for their music, the newspaper called this piracy. The website is now collecting the permissions of the artists to provice this service in the future and took some of the uncleared songs off the site. Nationnews is now claiming this as their own success against piracy.

We think that there should be a permission by the artist beforehand, but still the campaign is ridiculous and harms the music in the end. It might be more interesting to have a discussion about the importance of internet for soca music and its international recognition.

In all aspects and honesty, it was observe that IslandMix.com management did not have the right credentials to put copy righted musical material on their website, what amazes me is that people fail to see this far less understand because if Islandmix did have the required documents stating that the artists gave them permission to stream their material on the internet using their web site then all the “claming of priacy” Islandmix is doing by the local print media agency would be nothing more but free publicity with a big apology in the next issue.

Instead Members and patrons got angry, blame and threaten to boycott the Barbadian artists music rather than to open their eyes and see that the site didn’t have permission in the first place to stream the music on site, in the process, the music was took off the site to protect the best intrests of the site which was due to some of the contacted artists of whom material was on the site confirm that they were not aware that their music was on the popular webite farless gave permission to Management to stream the music to its members but at no point requested for the site to take off their music as some of the Bajan Artists do regconise the huge impact, advantage and significance of having their music promote on the internet more so on a popular website community as large as Islandmix.com

In contrast the local print media waz not fully informed of the good intentions of the site, the method it use to protect the Artists music and the advantages artists have of being book for work overseas as Promoters from England, New York, Miami as well as Canada frequent the site to see who to book base on the popularity and quality of the music.
In the end the paper waz were brought up to speed and agreed that the site is a vital asset of showcasing and promoting Soca music in the Caribbean.
