Gospel Chutney?

The Trinidad Express writes about a gospel concert in Trinidad, where Andy Rogers performed a tune called “Praise Him Till I Die ” sung to the riddim of “Rum Till I Die”.

Patrons jumped out of their seats dancing and cheering Rogers on as he performed the chutney selection.

Largest royality payment for COTT artists.

The Copyright Organisation (COTT) will disburse its largest single royalty payment ever. For 2004, some $1,621, 805, to be shared among members, will pe payed to the artists. This is an increase of 73% to the year 2003. The sum representing Broadcasting and General licensing fees collected.

Good bye Square One - welcome Square Root

The 17-year-old musical group has officially disbanded and reformed itself with fewer members and goes now by the name of Square Root. Members of the new band will be the vocalist and band leader Andy Blood Armstrong, musical director and keyboardist Terry Arthur, vocalist Cecil O’Shaka Riley, and female vocalist Keann Walters. They’re working on an album for Cropover 2005.

RIP Brian Honoré

The famous Commentor and the ubiquitous Midnight Robber deceased yesterday. His popular songs such as “Satellite Robber” and “Thousand More to Come” will definitely be etched indelibly in the minds of many. He worked with several composers such as Llewllyn Mac Intosh (Short Pants), Richard Braithwaite (Kiskadee), Ken Archer, and Andrew Joseph (Buntin).

Uncertainty over Grenada’s Spicemas

Caribbean Net News says that there are many unclear issues concerning this year’s Grenadian Spice Mas. No money will be given to mas bands, there is no marketing going on so far, and even the official launch date (22nd of july) is not confirmed.

Venezuela has it’s own calypso/carnival music tradition. Unfortunately there is not much info about it in the English speaking world. Check out elcallao.net for some info on the music of El Callao in Spanish. There are also some tunes by The Same People and Family Ground.
