After the desastrous 1:5 vs Guatemala last weekend the Soca Warriors made their first point on their Journey to Germany. In Port-of-Spain the team dominated the first half of the game but failed to shoot goals. In their group the warriors are still on the last place (check here), but there are 7 games left in Round 3.

The Trinidadian panist Glenroy “Patches” Mendoza passed away. He lived in Barbados and Trinidad as arranger, guitarist, drummer and bassist. His compositions can be heard on many calypsos by Mighty Sparrow, Gabby and Baron. Our condolences to Mendoza’s family.

The Havana carnival moved to February and March instead of July and November. This year, the carnival will coincide with the 485th anniversary of the founding of the city. Has anybody more information about the carnival in other Cuban cities and regions?

Right now we are heading to the main weekend of the Jamaican carnival. Get an event schedule here. The Jamaica Gleaner wrote about one of the biggest soca fetes at Chukka Cove, St. Anns last sunday. Featured artists and bands were Blue Ventures, Imij & Co and of course Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. The TinyWiny Contest was part of the show.
The mp3-blog etnobofin wrote a nice introduction to an old Sparrow 45rpm single on the National label.
Benjai left his band The Asylum. He was one of the original members of Godfathersl Asylum with Bunji Garlin, Scarface, Treasons; J-Dee and more.

Vincy artist Jamesy P. signed two record deals: for the USA and Canada with Next Plateau, a division of Universal Records, and for Europe with Ministry of Sound/EMI. Both labels are new players in the soca biz.

New laws will make it easier for the police to go against music pirates. These new laws are the basis for two international conventions known as the World Intellectual Property Organisation Internet Treaties.

Shurwayne Winchester and his band Caribbean Traffik Jam worked last week on the video of the roadmarch song 2k5 “Dead Or Alive” which will be released in April. As last year with “De Band Coming”, they hope that they will win again in the “Soca Video Production” category at Soca Awards.
With his big 2004 hit “Nookie” the vincy artist Jamesy P. is heading for international success. It is said that he already signed a record deal.

Another tune for the Trinbagonian football team Soca Warriors: Bunji Garlin voiced a tune on the Pot of Gold - Riddim called “Warriors coming”. Check it out on Trini Bashment.
Usually most soca productions are released near a carnival. This year we have to nice riddims which came shortly after this years Trinidad season:
Mystic Riddim is a nice slowtempo soca riddim with steel drums. Best tunes are “Soca” by Mr. Slaughter and Nicky Cordner’s “Only you”.
Remember Elephant Man’s “Bun Badmin”, which was the most played tune of Notting Hill Carnival 2004? This riddim came out on several labels over the years. Now there’s a soca version: Soca Tabernacle. Featured artists are Bunji Garlin (”Wave something”), Wanski, Fayann and more.
